Theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking sees “absolutely no value” in studying the TV show Seinfeld because “Twentieth-century Sitcoms” couldn’t have possibly foreseen the culture and technology of today.
“Seasons 1-9 are completely useless”
In a recent op-ed for Slate, Hawking, argued that the show, centered around a NY comedian and his 3 friends “does not speak to today.”
“I see absolutely no value to a person of spending decades, years, months, weeks, day, hours, minutes, or seconds studying Seinfeld, the history behind the creation, its troupes, characters, themes, or how it shed light on problematic cultural norms.” he wrote. “Twentieth-Century sitcoms, however smart, could not foresee the culture, technology, etc., of the 21st century.”
He added, “let’s not let the dead bury the living.”
